Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC)

With the arrival of the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC), things really started to kick off for Sept-Îles.

Extraction of the valued ore began in 1954 at its mine site in Schefferville and hasn’t stopped to this day despite the ups and downs of the market. The ore is still transported as it was in the 1950s to Sept-Îles on a 418 kilometers railroad linking the mine to the port. It is then shipped to the company’s many customers throughout the world.

IOC is one of the world’s largest iron ore producers and a leading global supplier of iron ore pellets and concentrates. The mining giant employs over 2 200 people locally. Its major shareholder and operator is Rio Tinto, the world’s third largest mining company.
