Rivière-aux-Rochers' Salmon Ladder

Did you know that more than half of Québec’s salmon rivers are found in the Sept-Îles area?

Some of them possess significant populations of large Atlantic salmon, weighing 7 kg (15 pounds) on average. At Rivière-aux-Rochers River a dam built for logging purposes had restricted the salmon to within 1 km (0.6 m) of the river mouth. Therefore, in the beginning of 1980’s, a new population of Atlantic salmon was introduced in the river. The population has been fully re-established through fish stocking and upriver relocation using a trap catch. Rivière-aux-Rochers Park (Salmon Ladder), located at the bottom of the Rochers River waterfalls, is exceptionally beautiful.

The fascinating Salmon Interpretation Center offers guided tours of the center and detailed information about the king of our rivers, how the species is threatened, and steps that have been taken to protect it. You’ll see the spawning run trap system in operation and—if you’re lucky—you may witness fishermen in action in one of the salmon ponds.
